Beyond Rubber: How Co-Design Solved a Critical Challenge in the Medical Sector

In many high-precision industrial sectors, the margin for error must be zero.

Often, during the development of new equipment, companies hit an invisible limit: standard sealing solutions available on the market are unable to guarantee the required performance under extreme operating conditions. Recently, a global leader in the Medical sector entrusted RORA with a complex design challenge: ensuring an absolute airtight seal in a critical environment characterized by high temperatures (120°C) and Zero Outgassing requirements.

Beyond the Standard Solution: The Shift to Co-Design

Common practice would suggest using traditional extruded gaskets. However, an in-depth analysis of the system’s closure kinematics revealed that a standard profile would be subjected to excessive torsional stress, compromising the long-term reliability of the entire machine.

RORA’s response was not just to supply a component, but to change the architecture: we designed a bespoke mirrored double-seal system. Thanks to this custom configuration, the two components interact by compressing in a controlled manner, creating an impenetrable barrier even under the most severe conditions.

Material Science and Rigorous Compliance

Beyond the study of geometry, the project’s success depended on material selection. To meet the technical specifications, we utilized a material capable of:

  • Maintaining a constant compression set after thousands of thermal cycles at 120°C.
  • Ensuring FDA compliance, guaranteeing the total absence of volatile substances or particle release into the operating environment.

The RORA Method: From 3D Math to Serial Production

In just 3 months of engineering partnership, we moved from technical gap analysis to industrial reality. Our intervention allowed the client’s R&D department to entirely delegate the development of the sealing system, eliminating the risk of design flaws.

The process followed rigorous steps:

  1. Mathematical Development: Creation of preliminary 3D models to virtually test assembly feasibility and accelerate validation.
  2. Industrialization Study: Optimization of the production process to balance technical performance, cost efficiency, and aesthetic requirements.

Results and Added Value

The result is a fully industrialized solution ready for serial production. By collaborating with RORA, the client transformed a technical criticality into a product strength, optimizing development times and ensuring maximum operational safety.
