In the technical rubber molding industry, some applications require components made from different elastomeric materials integrated into a single part.
Bi-material molding is an advanced manufacturing solution, but its success depends on much more than the molding process itself. Material development, mold design, and process engineering must work together seamlessly to achieve reliable, repeatable results.
The Challenge
For this project, the customer required a component combining two different elastomer compounds into a single part, with perfect adhesion between the materials, no cross-contamination, and a clean, well-defined separation line.
Meeting these requirements involved overcoming two major engineering challenges.
1. Material Development
The first challenge was identifying and developing two elastomer compounds capable of bonding perfectly during a two-stage manufacturing process.
The materials needed to:
- Ensure strong mutual adhesion.
- Preserve their individual mechanical properties.
- Withstand two separate molding stages without compromising the final component’s quality.
Selecting the right compounds and validating their behavior throughout the production process was a crucial part of the project.
2. Mold Engineering
The second challenge involved designing a dedicated molding tool.
The mold was engineered to produce the white section of the component first, ensuring that the material remained precisely confined to the required areas.
Next, through the automatic exchange of specific mold components, the tooling was reconfigured to mold the black section.
This engineering solution made it possible to:
- Prevent any mixing between the two elastomer compounds.
- Achieve a perfectly defined interface.
- Produce a sharp, consistent separation line throughout the entire production run.
Engineering Beyond Manufacturing
Projects like this demonstrate that the success of a bi-material component depends on much more than selecting the right material.
It is the combination of material development, mold engineering, and process optimization that transforms a complex design requirement into a reliable, repeatable production solution.
Every detail is engineered from the earliest stages to ensure dimensional accuracy, consistent quality, and stable manufacturing performance.
The RORA Approach
At RORA, we engineer every project starting from the application itself.
We work alongside our customers to develop not only the rubber component but also the complete manufacturing process behind it, integrating material development, tooling design, and molding technology into a single engineering solution.
Because behind every seemingly simple component lies a sophisticated engineering process.
